Field Trip to the Grove
Today we were able to go back in time with our tour guides Running Deer and Little Fox and experience what daily life was like for Native Americans 200 years ago. You practiced some of the chores, made crafts for decoration, and even learned some of the prayers and songs! It was fascinating to learn how the Native Americans would adapt to their environment to make various materials and tools that would assist them in having food and shelter. The Potawatomi tribe used bark and animal hide to make their longhouses. They also used animal bones for their weapons, which would help them hunt for food.
What did you enjoy the most about the field trip? Are there certain activities and chores that you found to be difficult to practice on a daily basis? Was there any new information you learned about that surprised you? Reflect about your field trip experience below.
My favorite activity was the one where you throw and you have to cut off the bisons toungue.
I do not like the braiding.
I liked braiding
Awesome job! ?
I disagree I do not like to eat a bisons toungue that sounds GROSS
I think the best part was the chores. The corn grinder for me was hard because you have to pick up a 50 pound stick. My favorite chor is the one to try and make a fire for the fireplace. I really liked doing this. I can’t wait to see what we do next year
I enjoyed that the tour Guide said that since the woman American Indians are in charge of building the long house that the oldest woman could KICK ANYONE OUT. I was so frustrated with the fire. I would not like to be an American Indian!!!!
I like when we made the stick trying to turn. I like when we played games
I agree. I liked the games to.
I enjoy most is the braid or I can call it craft. I think that getting water is difficult getting it every day.It surprises me was when we had to do chores as a kid.but it was still fun with the chores.Another thing that surprises me was when we had to make fire.I mad a little spark when we did the fire thing.
One of my favorite things was when we had to play steal the bones. I was a guard. The reason why I really liked it was because it was just really fun to play. Another thing I really enjoyed is when we got to braid. The reason for this was because outside of school I love to braid. One activity that is hard was not grinding corn it was getting the corn off of the cob with only one thumb. One thing that I did not know that you could shave of some bark and then in 30 years time it would grow back. My reflection for the field trip would just be I had lot’s of fun with this trip because we just got to learn some new history and it was just really cool.
Post is awesome! I am hooked to your writing. Keep up the good work!?
I enjoyed it when we got to braid with the beads. I liked it because it was my first time. Here is the list of chores I liked to do: Make the fire, grind the corn, and braid with beads. I thought that making the fire was also a little frustrating because it took a while for Harper and I to get the stick warm. Some new information I learned was that The Potawatomi Indians had to walk at least 4 miles to reach the Des plaines river to get water and to bathe. I also learned that black willow trees can be used for medicine. Let me get more specific, if you used a knife to cut of some bark, you could make it into tea which can be used as medicine. I was also surprised by how the women were in charge of the longhouse and that they could tell Native Americans what to do.
Good job Atchaya
My favorite part of the field trip is when I tried to make the fire. It was hard.It will be really bad if I had to hunt all the meat for my family. I Did learn how to make a braid.
I agree Kaden. It was hard to make fire.
I enjoyed trying to take the bones away from the guard. There is one activitie that was hard. It was trying to make a fire. I Iearned that the oldest girl in the tribe was in charge. If the men came back from hunting and they didn’t have anything the oldest woman will say get out of here. The Indians had to make fur with animals skin. The men had to where all this jewlery because they would be inportant in the tribe. If they were not waring jewlery they would not be inportant.
Lots of details Nikhil!?
I don’t really like the bone stealing thing because I lost?
I enjoy playing the games because they tell you lots of things like, knowing your senses. One thing that surprised me is that the native Americans had to walk a long time just for bathing and drinking at the river. One thing that was hard to do was making a fire, because they didn’t have advanced materials like we do. I learned a lot about Native Americans!
I love the braiding the most because it was so cool the way we have to do it with the beads on it. I don’t like the guard the bones game because it was kind of gross siting on the animal skin and it was also a little boring.
I understand about the animal skins. I feel the same.
My favorite activity was the throwing the corn because I like throwing things. I was happy because I got all three corns in. I didn’t like the game where you trie to steal the bone because I wanted to steal the bone. I learned how to make fire the Indian way. I thought it was hard to use sign language all the time. I wished we could of saw the animals. I liked when we touched the bones. I thought it will be heavy but it was not. I learned that the oldest Indian girl was in charge of the house. I also learned that if you have more jewelry you are more important than others. I also learned that the oldest girl in the tribe could kick other people out of the tribe. I wonder how long it took them to make the house. I also wonder if it’s dangerous to hunt. I also wonder if there is a lot of kids per tribe. I wonder what adventure come next.
I agree with you Donghyun! I also liked the corn throwing game and the thief and the guard game too!
You wrote really long!??
Donghyun, your so right!! The fire things are so fun. I really liked the sign language songs. I rally wanted to be the theif. I caught Kaden from catching the bone.
I like your writing. Lots of detail! I hope you keep up the good work??
My favorite part was the braiding to make something like rope. The hardest part was when you had to smash and grind the corn. The stick was really heavy. I thought it was funny when Ms. Georgis did it. It was also fun when the class threw the corn cobs at the target. I thought it was hard the way they started fire. It was really hard to make the stick warm. I was happy about the weather. I like the Grove.
I enjoyed the old ring toss to kill a bison rabbit and buffalo i also like trying to make fire I almost make a fire
What I liked the best was making the breads because well I’m a girl so I like that but also thought it was cool to what there jewelry was like back then. I thought it would be difficult to grind the corn on a every day basis because the woden thing was heavy. That the oldest girl could kick her own mid out. I thought it is cool how you can make sparks of fire.
I agree that the corn grinding was hard.
My favorite part of the grove is when we played the two games. I liked the tong game the most because I liked throwing corns. The one part that I didn’t like about the grove was that I had to braid. ?
I enjoyed making the bottom of the stick warm because it was a physics kind of thing, and because it was hard. I thought that the corn smashing was hard because if you didn’t smash the corn, you wouldn’t get married! I learned that the Potawatomi tribe used sign language instead of using words. The thing I didn’t like the most was braiding because it just wasn’t that fun. I wonder what it’s going to be like next year.
I enjoyed the games and seeing the long house because it was cool to see the animals skins and bones of animals. I thought that the corn grinding and in making the fire my stick was broken.
Ya Nathan, I really liked the fire one. I also made a spark.?
The field trip was awesome! ??
I loved to go to the grove especially in third grade.
My favorite part of the Grove was throwing the dart get the animals. But how can you kill that giant animal!???
I thought it was not boring and really fun. I disagree to the people who said it was boring.
I like all of it.the only thing I did not like is all of the dead animals.
I enjoyed braiding. I liked it because I helped lots of people braid it was lots of fun and I liked the thing when you squish the corn but what surprised me about it was if you don’t do it you can’t marry. What I found difficult was the thing where you like make the stick hot I think Roan and I found it hard.
I think the best activity was the chores. One of my favorite part of the chores was to make a fire. I also like the game where you throw corn.
I also enjoyed the long house when we were trying to make a fire or making the sticks warmer so the Indians can survive in the winter.?
I liked the game with the corn cob.
