Field Trip to the Grove

We had a fantastic time on our field trip yesterday to the Grove. While we were there, we learned so much about the Native American culture in the past 200 years. We even got to go inside a smaller version of a longhouse. It was interesting to learn some of the rituals, chores, and daily activities that every member of the family participated in. No matter the age or gender, everyone had important responsibilities to make sure that they had food to eat, a safe place to sleep, and clothing to wear.

What did you enjoy most about our trip to the Grove? Did you find any of the chores/activities to be challenging? Were there any facts you learned that you found to be surprising? Below you can share more about your field trip experience.

Exploring the Chicago History Museum

Yesterday we went to the Chicago History Museum. There was so much to see and do while we were there! We learned all about the history of Chicago and saw the long timeline of important events that have taken place. Some of you were even able to construct bridges to allow for boats of all sizes to pass through along the rivers. We saw an informative and exciting video that reenacted some of the events from Chicago History. In the sensing room, you all got an opportunity to learn what toppings are on a “true” Chicago hot dog by “becoming a hot dog.” You also got a glimpse of some common “smells” that existed in the various locations and time periods in Chicago.

Reflect on your experience at the Chicago History Museum. You can share what you enjoyed most, what surprised you, and what new information you learned while you were there. IMG_6556IMG_2889IMG_6561

Kindness… It’s Sweeter Than Candy

This past week, we were able to spread kindness around Wescott School by showing our appreciation for all of the staff members. Each group did such a wonderful job creating a personalized message or poem that related to the candy you brought to the teacher’s lounge each day. I especially enjoyed watching each of you contribute your ideas with such enthusiasm. It was impressive to see how well you were able to work together as a team. Your messages were very meaningful and creative.

What did you enjoy most about our class activity?  Can you think of other ways that we can continue to spread kindness at Wescott? Please share your thoughts.IMG_1647

A Trip Back in Time

What a fun filled day we had on our first field trip to the Grove! Not only did we luck out with perfect weather, but we got to explore and participate in the chores that were a part of everyday pioneer life. We learned lots of interesting facts about life in the midwest during the 1800s.

It is hard to believe that a large family would fit into such a tiny log cabin. Each member of the family had a crucial role in making sure their needs were met. I can’t imagine how the early settlers survived such extremes in their environment without modern day conveniences such as air conditioning, indoor plumbing, electric stoves, and refrigerators. Can you imagine having to walk miles in order to shop at a general store or to retrieve a bucket of water?

We also learned how important it was for children to participate in daily chores, which allowed the households to run as smoothly as possible. Children in that time period hardly had any time to play games. Although, we were able to play the “pin drop” game, which was very exciting. You even got to build your very own log cabin! What was your favorite part of the field trip? Did you learn any information that you found to be surprising? Please share your thoughts about our trip to the Grove.

Welcome to 4th Grade!

We have just completed our first full week of 4th grade! It was a busy and exciting time as we settled into a new school year. Our first few days of school were spent organizing our supplies and familiarizing ourselves with our classroom. Later in the week, you were able to learn more about your classmates and participate in several team building activities. This was a great way to practice working cooperatively with your peers, while developing problem solving strategies. One of my favorite activities this week was the “History of A Name.” It was so fascinating to hear the meaning behind your names or  how they were chosen. What was your favorite activity so far?
