Crispin chapters 1-4

Write a diary as if written by Crispin. The diary entry should include details of important events that occurred in the chapters, and how you think Crispin felt about what was happening.

Dear diary I have been having unfortunate events. Today my mother died and I have to pat the death fees by selling my oxen. And if I can’t work the farm I’ll starve. I went to the woods and I saw John and the Steward talking. The Steward gave John an envelope. I wonder what it means? Just then John said ” It’s Asta’s son!”
He started chasing me in the forest and I accidentally fell of a cliff. And to my luck he didn’t find me then I was walking to my cottage and I saw the Steward burning down my house. I hope that the next events will be much more fortunate.

You did a nice job of summarizing the important events. You need to also write about Crispin’s feelings.

    Dear Diary,

I am so depressed. Some jerks with axes started to break our house. Well, my house. My mother is not here anymore. She’s probably in heaven because she was friends with the priest. Anyway, my house broke down, and those people burned it down into little pieces. Is this all my fault? All the sins I did, is it paying off? Well, I’m not safe now and I don’t get the protection I get from our lord because of John Aycliffe. He was talking about something. What was it? Whatever it is, it’s something very important. I feel so depressed and shocked as the people burned down my house and when Aycliffe chased me, you won’t know how scared I was.

    Bye Diary.

    This is “my” diary.

Well done, Daniel. You did a nice job of including details from the text as well as Crispin’s feelings.

My life is miserable. I already lost my mom and I people are trying to kill me!!! They also burned down my house that I have called home for 13 years up until now. I don’t know how to survive all of this. I think that my time has come….

As I said in class, a quality response needs to be much longer than this.

    Dear Diary,

To start the worst day of my life, my mother died. Man, this couldn’t get any worse, well, guess what? It did! So this dude named John Aycliffe, made me pay my ox for “death taxes”. What a jerk. Even thought we didn’t even give my mom a coffin! How disrespectful! Hope she goes to Heaven. To top that I ran away. I know, it feels bad and all but if I don’t want to die and all it’s fine. After that I kept tripping, eventually I hit my head and blacked out. Man, what a day. It was terrible!! So than I saw light. My curiosity overwhelmed me. So I went toward the light. So when I get there I see this doofus handing a letter to John Aycliffe. So John Aycliffe sees me after reading his letter. So the chase begins. He unleashes his sword. We run a while until I get stuck in the bushes. The “SWISH” he almost chops me in half. Most of the action has already happened folks, WRONG! I was pretty sure that god was punishing me. Okay, so I go back to my cottage, but I see some friends with WEAPONS in their hands. So I hide in the bushes, then they go in the house and walk out seeing that now one in home. Then they take the house a part and SWISH, it goes down in flames. What a week, what a week.

You did a fine job of using details from the text to describe the important events of this tragic day. When you write, however, make sure to use Crispin’s voice, not your own. He would not use many of the words that you chose.

My name is Crispin. My last few days have been terrible. My mother died and I was devastated. The priest helped me bury her in the cemetery. I couldn’t stop crying. When Aycliffe came he told me to give him my ox. I was desperate so I fled into the forest. That night I saw Aycliffe talking with another man. It looked like a secret forest meeting. When Aycliffe saw me he tried to kill me, but I escaped. When I tried to return to my house the next morning I saw it being chopped down. I hid in some bushes.

This is a good start, Tommy. It looks as if you didn’t finish the reading because your diary is missing some important details.

    • Daniel February 25, 2013 at 1:05 pm

Nice job! I really liked your diary entry. But, no offense, I agree with Mrs. Onsrud.

  • Dylan February 19, 2013 at 8:17 pm

    Dear Diary,

Today was the worst day of my life.
My mom died and I was almost killed by that horrible John Aycliffe and his sidekick sword. Back to my mom’s death, they didn’t even give her a coffin! Guess what, for one of those “death taxes” they had to take away my ox! That horrible John Aycliffe. I think he wants me to starve, and maybe die.
I decided to run away, farther and farther, tripping as I go. I fell, hit my head, and became unconscious. I saw a light and curiosity took over. I saw that John Aycliffe talk to some stranger. That stranger handed him a envelope sealed with bright red wax, it must be important and secret.
I’m really curious on what that stranger was saying to him. And coincidentally that same stranger tore down my house with some other people.
Nothing, could be worse than this day.

Well done, Dylan! You did a nice job of balancing the events with the emotions.

  • Leah February 19, 2013 at 9:26 pm

    Dear diary,
Today, the most terrible thing happened. My mother died. I feel so sad and alone. I have no one left except the priest. The priest and I wrapped her body in a gray shroud. No birds sang. The sun hid behind the dark and lowering clouds. No sooner did we cover my mother’s remains with heavy earth than John Aycliffe appeared outside the cemetery walls. The priest asked me to go to church to pray, but I shook my head. He told me, “God will protect you. As he now protects your mother.”
Now that my mother is gone – What am I going to do? I ran into the woods. I kept tripping but that didn’t stop me from running. This time I tripped and my head struck a stone. I think god is punishing me for all the sins I did.
I must have hit my head hard since I woke up only at the last prayers of the night. I crept through the woods, and saw two men standing in a clearing. One was John Aycliffe. In his hands he had a sword and a torch. The second man, I’ve never seen before. He took out a parchment with a red wax seal. He gave it to Aycliffe. He unfolded it. He gave the torch to the stranger. Our eyes met “Asta’s son!” Aycliffe cried “There!” He ran toward me, and tried to strike me with the sword, he would have gotten me, but I tumbled off a cliff. I did not see Aycliffe’s torch. I got up and ran. I thought what my mother had told me about our lives. Once I was awake I could only think of what I’d seen the night before, the meeting in the woods. I was about to go out of the woods when I saw people carrying pikes and axes and heading for my cottage. I hid in a bush too see what was going on, and they destroyed my house! I feel so scared –where am I going to live now, I ran back to the woods.

Leah, you have included many of Avi’s words. You need to restate the author’s words in your own way next time.

  • Melissa February 20, 2013 at 9:06 am

    Dear Diary,

I am so depressed and sad. My mom died, and when the priest and I were burring her, John Aclyiffe came and said I had to give up my ox for a “death tax”, and when I said that then I couldn’t work the fields, he said STARVE. He’s a real jerk. Also, when I was in the forest, (I kind of ran in the forest when I got mad) I saw him with another person exchanging letters, sealed with wax, but when I tried to take a peek, he saw me and started to run after me. I got stuck in the roots of the ground, and he almost killed me with his sword. But luckily, in the haste of trying to kill me with his sword, instead, it cut the roots from under me, and I was free. I was running for my life, and then ended up rolling down a cliff. Then, the next day when I went back to my cottage, I saw people with axes destroying my house. I think my life is ruined……. FOREVER
